Prior to beginning couples therapy, I conduct a Gottman assessment in order to identify the specific areas in a couple’s relationship that need to be worked on. Thus, a tailor-made treatment plan is created for each couple.

Couple feedback session – assessment results and treatment plan (100 minutes $450)
Gottman Method Couples Therapy is designed to minimize a couple’s chance of relapse after therapy. Thus, the therapeutic context is moved from an initial triad (therapist + couple) during the assessment phase to a dyad (couple) during the treatment, in which the therapist acts as an emotion coach. The therapist has specific tools to help couples establish emotional connection.
Videotape feedback is a key tool in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Treatment sessions are videotaped. Playing back the videotapes in treatment sessions helps a couple see patterns of behaviour between them and helps them process conflicts. It allows us to “stop action” and process how the couple might approach a conflict in a more productive way. It also allows them to witness their progress as their relationship becomes more satisfying to them.
Note: The assessment is not videotaped, with the exception of the last portion of session 1 (couple interview). Videotaped materials will remain in locked facilities at all times.
It often takes several years for a relationship to get to a trouble point. Thus, it takes time to work on repairing that relationship. Generally, I like to see a couple regularly attending marriage counselling for at least six months, initially on a biweekly basis. When it is appropriate, couples begin to phase out of treatment, attending sessions on a monthly basis. After treatment has terminated, four follow-up sessions are planned at 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. All treatment sessions for couples are 100 minutes ($450).
Couples are expected to:
- Do weekly homework using The Gottman Institute’s The Seven Principles Couples Set ($49 US)
- Participate fully in all sessions
- Commit to having a better relationship
- Inform the coach (therapist) if they are not understanding something
If you are ready to undertake these expectations and make improving your marriage your priority, contact me today.
